What is CBD?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a non-psychoactive compound found in the cannabis plant and in hemp. Unlike its more famous cousin, THC, CBD does not get you "high" or impair cognition. We know from test tube preparations that it has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and studies show it is useful for alleviating convulsions, anxiety and pain. A number of medications contain CBD as a primary ingredient, such as Epidiolex, which can control seizures in severe forms of epilepsy, and Sativex, used for neuropathic pain in multiple sclerosis. Scientists are still unraveling how CBD can do this, but we know it mimics the "endocannabinoids" – naturally occurring neurotransmitters in the human body that our cells use to communicate with each other. We know that the endocannabinoid system is involved in regulating fertility, mood, appetite, pain and memory. By interacting with the endocannabinoid system in our bodies, CBD appears to be able to influence the immune system, dampen pain, decrease inflammation, and much more besides.

Will CBD show up on drug tests?

Standard drug tests are not designed to detect CBD, because it is legal, and while all legal CBD sold in the UK should test negative, if you are concerned we advise that you choose CBD isolate or broad spectrum. CBD isolate is "THC-free", and the levels of THC in broad spectrum CBD are so low that they are usually non-detectable by standard testing (<0.05% THC). Full spectrum CBD does contain THC but if it is less than 1mg per container it is within legal levels for the UK.
